Driver: Gary, just Gary Vehicle: Route 404 Not Found Teams: Metro Transit Co-op Base: 1980 Greyhound MC-8
Every route in the old St. Louis system had a number, a color, and a schedule nobody believed anyway. This one doesn’t. The destination sign up front cycled through its usual rotation exactly once after the co-op got it running, landed on an error code left over from whatever transit-authority software used to drive it, and has not changed since.
Gary drives. That’s the whole biography. He was behind the wheel when the MTC found the bus, and the working theory is he was behind the wheel before that too, possibly employed by an agency that no longer exists to pay him. He doesn’t take breaks, doesn’t take days off, and has never once explained why the route number is what it is. Riders who ask get the same answer every time: a shrug, and the doors closing.
The arrangement is simple, and it is the whole reason the bus is worth boarding. You bring the gun, or you rent one at the door, and you ride shotgun in the most literal sense the wasteland offers — Gary keeps the bus moving in a straight, unglamorous line while everyone aboard leans out the windows and handles the rest. It’s not elegant. It’s not supposed to be. A bus this size doesn’t dodge so much as it simply arrives, on schedule, whether the road agrees or not.
Line 404 Not Found has never missed a stop.
